The Full Story
Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd was originally established as Mabie Todd and Bard of New York, USA in 1873 and began production in the UK in 1905 under licence.
The UK branch bought out the US outfit in the early 1920’s and Mabie Todd became a wholly owned British company, thriving thanks to British preferences for conservative design and reliability and successful advertising campaigns.
This example is a gorgeous gold plated 'SWAN Pen', made by Mabie Todd in the early years in London, c1920s. The pen features a superb oblique flex nib - do checkout the writing sample it is every bit the ideal oblique - it has been fully restored and is ready to provide years of lasting service.
The Nitty Gritty
There are no major imperfections to note, no splits cracks or engravings.
Some of the gold plating of the grip section has come away (See photo 6)
Otherwise the pen is in immaculate condition, the gold barleycorn pattern has hardly been polished leaving the pen very well preserved indeed
