The Full Story
Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd was originally established as Mabie Todd and Bard of New York, USA in 1873 and began production in the UK in 1905 under licence.
The UK branch bought out the US outfit in the early 1920’s and Mabie Todd became a wholly owned British company, thriving thanks to British preferences for conservative design and reliability and successful advertising campaigns.
This example is a rare and soughtafter SWAN Self Filler in gorgeous golden coloured snakeskin pattern with red accents to the scales. The pen carries a 14k Gold semi flex nib which writes a fine line with a lovely degree of flex (see writing sample). The pen has been fully restored and is ready to write.
The Nitty Gritty
There are no major imperfections to note, no splits cracks or engravings.
There is some minor brassing and pitting to the trim and lever bar and the clip itself is not flush to the cap. Otherwise a beautiful example
The SWAN No.2 nib is a lovely flex nib which offers line variation from a fine to a broad. Ink flow is good and there is very little feedback and lovely writer.
