The Full Story
Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd was originally established as Mabie Todd and Bard of New York, USA in 1873 and began production in the UK in 1905 under licence.
The UK branch bought out the US outfit in the early 1920’s and Mabie Todd became a wholly owned British company, thriving thanks to British preferences for conservative design and reliability and successful advertising campaigns.
This is a rare and beautiful sterling silver SWAN Self Filler, the cap and barrel of which have been hand engraved with Victorian floral flourishes - a stunning piece of silver work and a beautifully preserved writing instrument in its original case, with only the lightest signs of wear, this is truly a remarkable piece of fountain pen history
The pen has been sensitively restored and is ready to write. The No.2 Mabie Todd nib is everything one might expect from a vintage nib of Mabie Todd calibre, a fine flex nib which with pressure flexes to a generous broad line. A delightful pen which writes beautifully out of the box
The Nitty Gritty
There are no major imperfections to note, no splits cracks or engravings.
The pen has some very minor surface wear on the black hardened rubber where the cap meets the barrel. However The sterling silver is remarkably well preserved. The box's hinge is a little loose, and the box shows age related wear for a box of nearly 100 years
There are minor signs of wear on the rear of the barrel, but no dings or issues making this a time capsule of a pen, beautifully preserved.
