The Full Story
Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd was originally established as Mabie Todd and Bard of New York, USA in 1873 and began production in the UK in 1905 under licence.
The UK branch bought out the US outfit in the early 1920’s and Mabie Todd became a wholly owned British company, thriving thanks to British preferences for conservative design and reliability and successful advertising campaigns.
Although The Blackbird pens were less expensive, they have proven the test of time and are by no means second rate fountain pens compared to their SWAN counterparts.
The 'new blackbird pen' was released by Mabie Todd in the late 1950's and featured a step forward away from the lever filled mechanism to a twist button filler (simply twist the metal button to fill). This allowed for a tapered barrel with a blind cap, giving the pen a sleek tapered finish.
The pen has been beautifully preserved, with its original case and instructions, and has been serviced and is ready to write with a delightful fine 14k gold semi flex nib
The Nitty Gritty
